History of Names in India

Names in India are intentionally chosen with a specific meaning. It is common for people (especially Hindus) to give names based on horoscopes.

Namkaran is one of the most important rituals that celebrates rites of passages. In the Vedic tradition, Namakran is the formal naming ceremony performed to select a newborn’s name. They use traditional methods and follow the astrological rules of naming. It is a happy ceremony where a family comes together to celebrate the birth of a child.

Hindus select a child’s name based on his or her ‘Nakshatra’ or birth star. This is determined by a Vedic astrologer. If a family astrologer is not available, there are astrology sites parents can use to determine the birth star based on the child’s birth date, time, and place.

Traditionally, the Namkaran ceremony is conducted after the ‘Jatakarma’ samskara which is 11 days after birth, immediately preceding the ‘Sutika’ or ‘Shuddhikaran’ period.

With more births taking place in hospitals and families no longer living within close proximity to one another, the ceremony is usually performed within a few weeks of the baby’s birth. Sometimes the ceremony can be delayed up to the baby’s first birthday.

Traditional Namkaran Ritual

The Namkaran ritual is started by the mother and father with pranayama, prayers, and mantra chanting in the presence of a family priest. A grandfather, uncle, or male family member can also perform the ritual in the absence of the father.

The priest offers prayers to the Gods, Agni, the god of fire, the elements, and the spirits of the ancestors.

Rice grains are spread on a bronze ‘thali’ or dish. The father writes the official name on the dish with a gold stick while chanting the God’s name. The name is then whispered by the father into the child’s right ear. He repeats the name four times along with prayer.

The rest of the family formally accepts the name by repeating a few words after the priest. The family astrologer presents the child’s horoscope at the ceremony.

The elders offer their blessings along with gifts and the ritual ends with a feast.
