History of the Name Damian or Damien

In its Latin form, the name was first brought to England by the occupying Romans in the 1st century. 

Saint Damian and his twin brother Saint Cosmas were both 3rd century Arab physicians in the town of Cyrrhus, a city in ancient Syria. The name Damian became popular among Christians during the Middle Ages. 

After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, the name generally disappeared until the Normans reintroduced it to England after the Conquest of 1066. Damian has been in steady use since the 13th century.
