The first well known use of the surname was by the Jesuit priest Saint Francis Xavier during the 16th century. He was from the Spanish kingdom of Navarre and Etxeberri was the estate name where the saint was born. He was a devoted companion of St. Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits who took vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre, Paris. He was also known as the “Apostle of the Indies” and “Apostle of Japan,” and considered to be one of the greatest missionaries since Paul the Apostle.
